Plaza San Juan Bautista
San Juan, Puerto Rico
Design and Supervision Services for the Superintendency of the Capitol of Puerto Rico for the restoration and remodeling of the existing 1960’s plaza. The design for the Plaza San Juan Bautista, used as a reference the Bennet Parsons and Frost Capitol of Puerto Rico grounds layout from 1924-26 as the geometrical design inspiration. The plaza exhibits the 78 municipal coat of arms in ceramic mosaic on a lighted semi-circular angled exterior base that flanks the landmark bronze statue of Saint John the Baptist by Puerto Rican sculptor Rafael Lopez del Campo. The San Juan Bautista sculpture was restored by team of sculptors from the Puerto Rico School of Plastic Arts and Design, as part of the project. After the statue’s restoration was completed, the statue was lifted to new concrete and marble cladded pedestal that provided a more dignified and visible central focus for the plaza facing the Capitol of Puerto Rico’s north facade. The project was completed at a cost of $3MM.
