San Juan Episcopal Church Restoration, San Juan, P.R.
Project Type: Historic Preservation- Restoration
Design and Supervision Services for the Dioceses of the Episcopal Church of Puerto Rico for the remodeling and restoration of the San John the Baptist Episcopal Cathedral, located in the Santurce suburb of San Juan. A detailed assessment report was conducted on site resulting in the most precise and economical way to preserve the church’s urgent 4,500 sf leaking roof conditions. The entire Spanish clay tile roof and substructure was replaced as part of this project and the beauty of the executed structural woodwork inspired in the decision of leaving the restored wood structure exposed. Interior plaster and ornamental work were also restored by skilled artisans along the stained glass to the south of the altar. Project completed at a cost of $500K replacing the entire wood decking, structural enhancements and retrofit, new underlayment and Spanish Clay tiles.
Centro Musical Ignacio Quintón, Caguas P.R.
Project Type: Adaptive Reuse - Historic Preservation
Design and supervision services for the municipality of Caguas for restoration and adaptive/reuse of the first Baptist church of Caguas. The designated historic structure is an early 1900’s structure, consisting of2-story, 10,000 sf of construction, in the historic urban center of Caguas, was converted into a Cultural Musical Center as per municipal cultural planning goals. The restoration design reinforced the original church roof wood structure, restored the 2-level concrete annex building to the rear and replicated in mahogany wood all windows and doors to original neoclassical detailing. The utmost in restoration efforts of lost elements and re-utilization of original historic fabric was utilized in this project achieving the clients’ goals. The restored church is presently the Centro Musical Ignacio Quintón an important municipal musical cultural resource. The project was completed at a cost of $1.2MM.
